Two boys found the body of Carmen Colon on Stearns Road, Churchville. As with all three body dump sites, the Alphabet Killer used the Zodiac’s keyboard technique to morph the street address into a message for the police.
Stearns Road is one of the better examples of the technique in action. The jokes are pithy and to the point, while the patterns produced by the changed letters are striking, as shown below.
But what was the vile gag, and why was the killer called an evil cur? To answer these questions, we must refer to an Article entitled “Reward’ which appeared in the 21st of November 1971 edition of the Democrat and Chronicle. Although the article’s primary focus was a reward offered for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Carmen Colon, the article also dealt with a strange message the police found on a door in the premises of Sibley, Lindsay and Curr Co.
The message on the door is the killer’s vile gag. The name Curr in the company name links the message on the door to the hidden message in Stearns Road, Churchville. Equally, the message on the door is weak, or as the killer put it, ‘a bit sad’.
